FrankenRAID
Taken from my post on ChattaLAN:
I know I’ve talked to a few of you about this, so I figured I’d post my progress…100%. I got the computer that Pie built and was going to build it into some extra storage for Overkill. Well, it’s up and running. I found a 128MB stick of RAM in another desktop (swapped it for the 64MB stick that was in there) and reformatted with XP. I threw in an old AGP 8MB video card, a network card, and an Adaptec SCSI-160 controller. Then, daisy-chained off that Adaptec card are 5 18.2GB SCSI drives that format out to about 16.4GB. I used the XP logical disk manager and converted all the disks to dynamic and then set them up as a RAID 0 (striped). I don’t think that little 450MHz processor and 128MB of RAM could run Win2k3 with an OS-level RAID 5. So now I’m copying about 40GB of non-critical data from Overkill to free up some space temporarily.
Oh, and the specs on the drives:
Capacity: 18.21 GB
Speed: 7200 RPM
Average Seek Time: 7.9ms
They aren’t Cheetahs like I thought, but it’s better than nothing!
