Landroller Review: First Impressions

I initially purchased the Landrollers because I thought they might be pretty cool to try out and replace my CCM PF6’s as my recreational skates. Sure, there was a lot of hype on the Landroller.com web site and not much in the way of real reviews, but I went for it anyways. I think I may have just wasted $250.

I’ll start off with the good. The boots are very comfortable and supportive. And the out-of-line wheels do provide added stability when standing or skating in a straight line. The wheels also seem pretty durable. Finally, you get lots of looks and attention when wearing them. I skated past one group of people and one of the girls jumped and yelled “What the hell are those?!” I just kept skating.

And that’s about it. The stability from the out-of-line wheels seems to hinder agility. I can’t make turns like I want to. I also don’t get the freedom to easily drift back and forth with my feet inline. The wheels or the axles or maybe the lack of bearings seem to really hinder speed. I’m talking like a 50% reduction in speed on downhill or flat rolls. It is also 150% harder to try to gain speed when skating. The skates are also heavier than my hockey skates. Much heavier. And when you pick your foot up off the ground, you can feel the weight of the wheels on either side of your feet. Crossovers are much more difficult as the wheels are large and extend beyond the front and back of the skates. I almost took a dive when my back right wheel clipped my front left. Fortunately, once I got the skate planted back on the concrete, I was able to stay upright. I haven’t tried any off-road or rugged skating, but with bumps and cracks in the concrete on the River Walk, there doesn’t seem to be much improvement for a smoother ride. There is a noticable different, but just barely. Finally, I don’t know if it’s just me, but they somehow seem to work a different set of muscles. I can do 10 miles on regular inlines with no problems. With the Landrollers, the front of my calves were really burning. It’s not a bad thing to work those extra muscles, but it just seemed very weird to me.

In all, I’m not very impressed with the performance of the skates. I’ve only gone about 5 miles on them and will probably give them another couple of tries before making my final decision. For now, though, the outlook isn’t very good for these skates. I’m definitely going back to my inline hockey skates for tomorrow, just because I miss them so much after suffering through the Landrollers.

For those of you who haven’t seen them, here’s what a set of Landroller skates looks like:

i have to agree with PhragMunkee i weighed the landrollers and they weigh almost 4lbs more than my hockey skates(total weight of both skates). but they are unique i didnt get a block from my home when a perfect stranger stopped to ask me about them and then a super hot woman approached me about the skates also, not too bad. would i recommend them? if you want to try something new? go for it. if you want a superior product? then dont. would i buy the next generation or the landrollers 2.0? only if they had a better boot, an aluminum blade and some real laces.

i just got these stupid Landrollers at the tune of $284.00 including shipping. What a waste of money. yeah, I get looks and oohs and ahs but there speed is awful, acceleration worse and the boot is - well I had to go up to size 12 after a NIGHTMARE attempt to exchange them with their “customer service” one man show “James ka”. The size 12 of course is a 1/4″ too big and the next size down was unbearably too small. My dog out runs me in these skates - runs ahead on the leash. As a side note - I returned the first skate and they said they had no record of me printing out a return label and therefore - AFTER - I shipped it back they said there was “nothing we can do”. I, like an idiot thought I printed out the tracking number but I had only kept in my email which was inadvertently deleted. So “they’ were TOTAL dicks about the return until I threatened to report them to BBB and the D.A. for consumer fraud. FUCK LANDROLLER. Their skate sucks, their service is non-existent. Maybe a conversation starter with a chic if your on the boardwalk but if you have to resort to that then you could just wear a cool hat and work on your pick up skills. DONT BUY THEM.

So in doing some research on the Landrollers, I came across your blog. Since this review was posted some time ago, what I am curious to know is if your opinion has changed. Have they grown on you at all, or do they gather dust in the corner of the closet? I am finding it difficult to ignore the siren song of all those positive reviews on the Landroller website. Do you still say to steer clear?

I sent mine back. I was not very impressed. They’re unique, but not for me. I much prefer my traditional inline skates. Nick and Hunter’s comments are spot on.

Thanks, I was considering buying these, but now I will wait and try a pair first. Maybe there will be a model with really fast bearigs, those big wheels should haul ass, they look to me like a great distance skate, maybe even a good city skate, I wonder how durable they are, and how well they do on long flights of stairs, or skating backwards.
