CVS: Coffee Ventilation System
I went to Lowe’s today and spent $30 on my coffee roasting setup. I decided that after a Vienna roast nearly smoked me out of the garage and gave me a headache, I need some sort of ventilation system. Well, after some not-so-careful planning and a quick trip to Lowe’s, I have it!
Parts used:
- 4″x10′ corrugated tubing (solid/no holes). This is the stuff you put at the end of a gutter downspout and bury into the ground for drainage.
- A 25-ct pack of 1 3/8″ eye screws
- A 15-ct pack of 18″ zip ties
- A few feet of rope
I put the eye screws in the wall surrounding the laundry room and then ran the zip ties around the tubing and through the screws to secure it to the wall. The rope was used on the outside so that I can take it down and bring it into the garage whenever I need to close the garage door. Here are the pictures:

Secured with rope so that I can take it down and close the garage door when needed.
I’ll probably install a metal mesh on the end so that no birds try to build a nest only to have their babies cooked!

You can see the smoke coming out! The first test roast is a full city+, so it’s smoky. This will really come in handy for a dry-sorted batch or a Vienna/French roast.
I’m hoping that the heat will help mold it into place to reduce the strain on the eye screws and may reduce the need for the chain and the duct tape holding the exhaust onto the chaff collector.
